CREATE Program awarded $1.25 million for Chicago grade separation project

Illinois federal, state and Chicago officials late last week announced a $1.25 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) that will be used for a grade separation project in Chicago that is part of the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program.

The grant will fund design and engineering services to construct a grade separation for Union Pacific Railroad‘s double track main line that crosses 95th Street at Eggleston Avenue in Chicago. On a typical day, the crossing handles 24 UP and CSX trains and two Amtrak trains, as well as 24,000 motor vehicles and 700 buses, according to a press release issued by CREATE.

The Chicago Department of Transportation and Illinois Department of Transportation received the funding, which was issued as part of the FRA’s Safe Transportation of Energy Products (STEP) by Rail Program. CREATE competed against applicants for a share of $10 million in funding…

During the gold rush, the City Of San Francisco became something unique in the history of maritime commerce.  It became the roach motel of maritime commerce.  Ships sailed into the bay and never left.

In time the vessels were all bunched up in the bay waiting for crews that had disappeared into the hills.  Eventually there were 500 vessels of various sorts piled up in the bay, having met the fate of the Niantic, a whaling vessel turned passenger ship that went to San Francisco, later being turned into a hotel and warehouse.

Smitty at Camp MacKall & the Knollwood Maneuvers

The type of construction used for the barracks at Camp MacKall and the above hospital is called a “theatre of operations.”  Built on pilings and constructed of green sawed pine boards which is then covered with type 4 black tar paper.  The wood was cut from trees on the camp property using 7 sawmills running 24/7.  When the boards dried out, the 2 pot-bellied stoves were incapable of keeping the men warm.  Smitty spent some time at that hospital when the army discovered he did not perspire.  The medication took 3 weeks to kick…

Missing painting

This dry pastel painting only exists in my mind and on this photo.

The original painting is gone and will never come back.

Sounds more dramatic than it is.

I bought dry pastel crayons and I did this painting as a test.

Then I tried to use fix spray to get the colors in the painting stay on the paper and not dust away or move around when someone touching the painting. Dry pastels are tricky that way. You have to fixate them.

That spraying thing didn’t work out well. I did it wrong and destroyed the painting. So I threw it away. But I took the photo before my fixation tryouts.

I have done some more dry pastel paintings and now I try to fix spray them very carefully.
