TheTuskegee Airmen/tʌsˈkɡ/[1]is the popular name of a group ofAfrican-Americanmilitary pilots (fighter and bomber) who fought inWorld War II. Officially, they formed the332nd Fighter Groupand the477th Bombardment Groupof theUnited States Army Air Forces. The name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks and other support personnel for the pilots.

All black military pilots who trained in the United States trained atMoton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and were educated atTuskegee University, located nearTuskegee, Alabama. The group included fiveHaitiansfrom theHaitian Air Force, and one pilot fromTrinidad.[2]

Although the 477th Bombardment Group trained withNorth American B-25 Mitchellbombers, they never served in combat. The99th Pursuit Squadron
