Snippets 137. In 1854 the American Rev. George Foxcroft Haskins went on a tour of Europe and one of the highlights of his trip was an extended stay in Rome. One of the many things that fascinated him about St Peter’s was the lighting of the external lamps. In those day this involved a little more effort than flicking a switch! The following quote is taken from Travels in England, France, Italy and Ireland, published in 1856.
In the evening we had a fine view of St. Peter’s illuminated. We went early, in order to see the men — about three hundred — who were setting the lamps in their places. La maison individuelle est un modèle dominant en France. Sur un parc de 33 millions de logements, 18,4 millions sont des maisons individuelles, soit 56% des logements ordinaires, occupés principalement par leur propriétaire. Cette forme de logement compose alors une grande partie du paysage.
Malgré sa propension à occuper une trop grande portion d’espace et ses inconvénients du point de vue de sa trop grande consommation d’énergie, la maison individuelle est considérée comme le « logement idéal ». Au contraire, la « machine à habiter » collective séduit beaucoup moins.
En France, les maisons individuelles sont construites à raison de 5% par les architectes. Le reste l’est par des entreprises de constructeurs qui proposent des catalogues de maisons types atteignant jusqu’à 200.000€. Une fois la commande passée, la maison est construite en seulement deux mois.
